Anyone know if we can install the rear axle in the opposite direction safely?

I put 4,700 miles on mine with it in backwards. The way the stealership installed it after putting new tires on. They also put my front wheel on backwards.

Rear axle has no clue which end is up = Any direction will work fine. Engineering is neutral, say.
Front wheel shows an 'arrow forward' = Spaced for ABS tone wheel, say.
Mechanics learn the hard way is put you in danger!
Guy was rotating wheels watching the chaos when I was wrenching on cars for awhile. Person road out and lost a few wheels. Guess the test drive was not far enough to put the mechanic in danger = But a few more minutes in your hands is a different story = "The Horror"...

I always flip mine so that the nut is on the sprocket side. Makes getting things back together much easier.
